Making High-Quality Knives In The Old World Tradition

Grohmann Knives Limited, founded in 1961, is
owned by the Babinec family. Approximately 20 people are employed by Grohmanns
of which 9 are family.
Founded by Mrs. Babinec's father Rudolph Grohmann (a Sudeten
German from Czechoslovakia) who, with his family, moved to Canada in 1949. He
came to Canada by invitation from the Government to develop the knife industry
in Nova Scotia.
The government-funded factory Mr. Grohmann first worked at eventually closed
down. At this time Mr. Grohmann decided to go into business for himself doing
what he did best - making knives.
From a garage workshop, he began to produce an engraved, folding hunting
knife which his daughter and grandson sold door-to-door. Through a contact made
by his daughter, Berta Babinec, Rudolph Grohmann met Ottawa knife shop owner, Mr.
Deane H. Russell. Realizing the need for a Canadian designed and
Canadian made outdoor knife, Mr. Russell (designer) and Mr. Grohmann
(manufacturer) developed the "D.H. Russell Belt Knife" line of outdoor
knives.
The first knife, the #R1S, was introduced in 1957. This
model won the National Industrial Design Council Award and was
displayed at the world's fair in Brussels in 1958. Because of its unique
Canadian design it was aIso exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York
and permanent exhibition samples were requested by the National Design Councils
of both the Australian and New Zealand Governments.
From its Pictou, Nova Scotia, factory, Grohmann
Knives manufactures kitchen knives as well as its popular hunting
knives. New models and additional products are always being added to the
inventory. This company, based on family traditions, is now under the strong
direction of Mike and Berta Babinec's sons Michael Jr., Roland, and Norman. They
still consider knife-making as much an art as a trade. As many as 53 steps go
into the process and the knives are made from stainless steel from Germany,
plantation grown rosewood from East India and top grain cowhide sheaths
manufactured locally. With a large and loyal market in Canada and the United
States, Grohmann exports top quality knives to Australia,
Europe, the Middle East, and Japan.
